Street Fighter 6
8/30/1987
A talented martial artist, Ryu, and his rival, Ken, challenge fighters around the world in a bid to become the strongest. At the time of release the game could be played on two different cabinet types; one with the different strength punches and kicks mapped out across six buttons, and another that featured two pressure-sensitive buttons that determined the strength of attacks. Player one would always be Ryu, and player two Ken, as they were the only playable characters. The pair could pull off their iconic Hadoken, Shoryuken, and Tatsumaki Senpyukyaku moves even then, but only if you knew how to. The commands weren't publicly shared like they are today.
3/7/1991
With the roster expanding to eight playable characters, players could employ a variety of tactics, making for engaging back-and-forth fights. This, along with the game finding its way into homes through the console ports, served as the spark that kicked off a fighting game boom. The Four Kings were added as playable characters in Street Fighter II Champion Edition, and Super Street Fighter II saw the additional of another four brand-new fighters. Between Street Fighter II, Champion Edition, Street Fighter II Turbo: Hyper Fighting, Super, and Super Street Fighter II Turbo, the game has five versions that are still played by ardent fans, even now.
6/22/1995
Using the same animated style as seen in the Darkstalkers series, Alpha depicted events taking place between the first Street Fighter and Street Fighter II. Building on the Street Fighter II roster, the series introduced a host of new characters including Guy and Cody from Final Fight. The dramatic battles, akin to scenes from an anime movie, were a joy to watch and the series boasted a roster of 28 characters by the release of Alpha 3.
2/28/1997
A full-on sequel to Street Fighter II, with newcomer Alex taking Ryu's place as the main protagonist. Featuring the richest animations yet to grace the series, and an all-new Parry mechanic to deflect your opponent's attacks, this series was a showcase of numerous new systems. Akuma and Hugo were added to the cast in Street Fighter III: 2nd Impact, and Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike saw the addition of Chun-Li and Makoto to bring the roster up to 19 characters.
7/18/2008
This entry set out to return to the series to its roots by focusing on providing a more straightforward fighting experience while also incorporating elements from both Street Fighter II and Street Fighter III. The game also introduced Focus Attacks, which could absorb a single blow from your opponent. The painterly ink effects found throughout the game helped cement its unique visual style. The releases of the Super and Ultra versions brought the final roster up to 44 playable characters.
2/18/2016
This entry introduced V-Skills, actions unique to each character, and V-Triggers, a mechanic that let players unleash special abilities. The game featured an Arcade mode and also supported cross-platform play for players to battle it out freely on their system of choice. The Arcade Edition and Champion Edition releases brought the cast of playable characters up to 45 fighters, all with a host of outfits from tie-ups and special events.
2023
The latest entry in the series. Players will find the classic fighting game experience in the Fighting Ground mode, which will be just one of three modes available. Series veterans Ryu and Chun-Li will make a return, and they'll also be joined by Luke, who was first introduced in Street Fighter V. The game is packed with new features, such as the Drive System and live commentary, that really bring the fight alive. There's still plenty yet to be revealed, so keep an eye out for more exciting announcements coming your way!
