Hello everyone, and pleased to make your acquaintance!

With this column I'd like to talk about some of the denizens players can run into while playing through World Tour Mode.

If you're interested in side stories, little secrets or how we came up with the names for the characters, then this column is perfect for you!

Now, let's talk about our first trio of characters.

On the dev team, this trio are called "tutorial triplets".

They're a group of three characters that teach you various things right at the beginning of your story when you land in Beat Square. They'll appear in various places with different challenges in order to encourage you to improve yourself in battle.

By the way, their names are based on the word "Trial"!

Do you see it now?

If you're wondering who's the big brother between Tracy and Ryan, you can guess just by looking at how Trial is spelled.

If you're wondering which one was the red one and which one was the green one, well, the big bro is red and the little bro is green. We'll leave you to figure out the rest!

Us here at the sound team want to talk about our thought process and what we do on the game, and this time we'd like to talk about the background music.

Atsumi-san:
I'm the sound director on Street Fighter 6 and oversee everything related to sound. In order to express what our director, Nakayama-san wanted in this game, we worked on building a direction for the sound, adjusting everything between the voices, BGM and sound effects so that everything comes out in a super refined state. 

Terayama:
I'm Terayama, the lead composer on the game. I'm in charge of supervising the overall BGM and music production. Things such as what sounds should play at what timing to make an interesting melody is what I think about when creating the songs so that everything comes out nice when played in the game. Multiple composers are involved in creating the soundtracks, and I supervised all of it so that we can really create the world of Street Fighter 6 through music, all the while giving each composer their own unique touch in the game.

Atsumi:
So let's get into it and talk about how the BGM came into being for this game!

Terayama:
When I first joined the team I was still fumbling around about how to create the music for the new game. Street Fighter 6 has a big hip hop art style, and I love hip hop music, and I'm influenced by that genre and its offshoots. So I went and tried to make something that sounded like it was a fighting game, like it was Street Fighter, like it was a Capcom game, and mix that all together to create something wholly unique for Street Fighter 6.

Atsumi:
For both the art and sound, Nakayama-san said he wanted it to feel like hip hop. He wanted to try something challenging for this new game. There aren't any hardline rules in hip hop, but if you kind of follow stuff that surrounds the word Hip Hop, it gets hard to match the BGM with the intensity of the game. I remember really struggling with how to incorporate that aspect into my work.

Terayama:
Yeah that's right. I remember it was very difficult to make it sound like Street Fighter-esque music while at the same time being true to hip-hop. The basic tempo and rhythm are inspired by hip-hop, but there are also times where we went off the beaten path to achieve something closer to a Street Fighter sound. On top of that, when you think hip hop, you think of rap, so I was also worried about the lyrics.

Atsumi:
I remember that at an early stage we were thinking about the overall balance of the game, and instead of adding rap everywhere, we only added it to the places we felt it had meaning.

Terayama:
Exactly, we put rap into places where we needed some sort of intention, because the scene called for it. But I definitely remember where we started off with just instrumentals and we were kind of feeling that we wanted to add rap because just expressing something through the battle wasn't enough (laughs) 

There's a song where the moment I composed it, I had a personal breakthrough and I felt, "yes! just the instrumental will be fine here!"

Atsumi:
Wasn't that the training mode stage track?

Terayama:
Yes, correct!

Terayama:
Each of the three modes in Street Fighter 6 has their own art style and gameplay, and we made sure to also have that clear separation with the music. Doing that allows us to expand the world of Street Fighter into something much bigger. However, expanding too much on the initial concept will allow things to spiral out of control, so first I concentrated on creating music that sort of symbolizes each mode. So in the game when you're choosing which mode to play and move the cursor, the music changes, and sort of gives you an idea of the concept of each mode.

Atsumi:
The music evolves into various genres as you progress in the game, but since there is an original source for each mode, you can feel a sense of cohesiveness. I want to hear what parts were you consciously aware of specifically.

Terayama:
The world tour has an modern, city sound, and generally stays up-tempo. It makes extensive use of processed samples for brass and vocals, etc. to create a city-like sound. Fighting Ground image has an underground street feel to it. The tempo is close to traditional hip hop. So my thoughts were to compose music that revolves around the big booming synth bass. The Battle Hub is based on jazzy arrangements, creating an atmosphere of a place where you can connect with people in real time.

Atsumi:
Searching for a new direction, making sure we got a proper, unique sound for each of the three game modes... At first, it was a series of experiments and tests. It was a while ago but it feels like it was yesterday!

Terayama:
Yeah we were losing our heads over it, but it all paid off in the end!

Atsumi:
Yeah, I feel so relieved that we finally made it to release! So this column has gone a bit long so we'll end things here, but we'll think of another topic to touch upon for next time. Thanks for reading!

Sound Team Introductions & The BGM Business

Hello everyone!

This is the first column where we'd like to talk about Street Fighter's UI, called "UI Street"!

In "UI Street", we would like to talk about all the paths we had to travel on our way to the end of the game, from some of the memorable UI creations for Street Fighter 6 to inside stories, as well as ideas that didn't pan out.

First off, we'd like to introduce the UI team!

I'm Tobita, the writing this column and the lead UI designer.
I supervised and produced the graphics and implementation of the entire UI for Street Fighter 6. I create the UI while keeping in mind my motto "easy to understand and easier to play".

I went into the UI design of Street Fighter 6 to make it easy to play for people coming from Street Fighter V and for people playing Street Fighter for the first time. I hope that everyone can enjoy the game without worrying about the UI!

The second person involved in the UI is Ueda, who primarily focused on producing the graffiti that's a staple of the this game.

Ueda: Hi everyone, as many of you are aware, Hip Hop was one of the key themes for Street Fighter 6, and I was in charge of producing the graffiti for the game. In addition to the background and UI, I was also in charge of creating all of the character names in graffiti. 

Although it's not directly tied to the game, I also created SF6's graffiti for various game shows, exhibits and collaboration products. I've like to talk about various stuff related to the graffiti, such as introducing how I drew it and how I did it on SF6.

Now that the introductions are out of the way, both of us will talk about some of the cool things we did on SF6!

Let's start with something small...

A lot of graffiti art appeared in Street Fighter 6. You can even see it in the character select screen, and I'm sure a lot of players have already noticed it. This is what it looks like.

Usually it's covered by the UI and characters but I think just the background itself is very fresh and cool!

Actually, this background is different from the graffiti work that we used in the demo version that appeared at a lot of shows!

That background is actually this one.

We purposely had some of the graffiti not done and went with a design that sort of communicated to the player that it's still a work in progress.

Even if you're just a player, looking and imagining what kind of meaning all of the designs have is another way to enjoy the game.

The VFX team is coming at players with a column called The Secrets of Visual Effects! Periodically we'll talk shop about special effects, and give players a peek behind the curtain to show what went on with Street Fighter 6's VFX development!

Since this is the kick-off article, we're going to focus on the protagonist of Street Fighter 6, Luke, and his Sand Blast special move, along with its effect concept art.

The team had conceptualized the move as something where Luke essentially fires a bullet of compressed air towards the opponent just by swinging his arm with unbelievable strength and speed. It's a very Street Fighter-esque technique that requires equal parts brain and brawn.

We looked to express that concept by incorporating ideas such as the spreading impact when the attack is fired, plus the sparks that fly due to the friction in the air, as well as when the attack hits an opponent.

When we were incorporating these ideas into the game, we had to balance it for playability, so we did things such as adding afterglow to the bullet and sparks for better readability, as well as turning Luke's pumped up arm red due to the heat. Check it out in the game to see for yourself!

(Of course, there were other ideas that were ditched along the way...hopefully we can get to those another time...)

Next time we'd like to talk about other sorts of visual effects that we created for Street Fighter 6! It's gonna really interesting, so we hope you'll take a look!

Hello everyone, and nice to meet you all, if we haven't interacted before!
I'm Sanko, one of the game designers that worked on World Tour. (*1)

I'm actually the same age as the director, Nakayama-san, and I have fond memories of playing fighting games at the arcade when I was just a kid, like many of us did. I had the good fortune of being able to work on Street Fighter this time.


And I'm so happy that were able to develop such a large-scale mode for a fighting game, it felt amazing to pull it off.

I think it'd be awesome if we can go behind the scenes and talk about all the cool war stories that happened during the development of the game. 

Well, at least the stories I can talk about anyway...


Now then, here is where we'll start talking about...

The Million World Tour Battle Ruffians!

I want to give everyone an intro to the battles that go down in World Tour! (*2)


So, for the first post, we'll talk about...
THE SKILL TREE!

If you've ever played an RPG before then you'll be familiar with this kind of customization system. We designed our skill tree after the fighting games tournament brackets everyone is familiar with so the skill you choose is the one that "wins" their fight. I think it looks nice, and the idea itself is pretty clever, if I do say so myself!

I also think it's unique how we mixed up the skills so that they affect the RPG-like parts of the game while others affect the battles themselves.


One thing you may not know is that the skill tree can be reset!

You may have noticed the control guide at the bottom of the screen. Whenever you want to change your character's stats to be more in line with the fighting style and special move loadout you have, by using up your Miles (about 10 Continues worth), you can get back all of your skill points. It's a pretty big number of Miles to spend, but it's there whenever you need to use them!

Another quick tip is that the skills you don't choose may appear somewhere else.

You do have to choose the skills you want in this system, but the skills that you don't choose may show up in a later skill tree. This means that you don't have to worry about forever passing up on a skill.
